A rare and important 18th Century French soft paste porcelain cup and saucer.
The cup with a shaped handle, the saucer circular with a deep well, each finely painted 'en Camaïeu Bleu' with a scene of Cupid amongst clouds with his various attributes, within a richly gilt cartouche on a Bleu Lapis ground. The rim of the cup & saucer each with a dentil border. The base of each with the painted blue interlaced Ls mark enclosing the date letter D for 1756–1757 above an arrow and circle cypher for the painter François Duverdy. Produced at either the Vincennes or Sèvres porcelain factory.

** The Vincennes porcelain manufactory was established in 1740 in the disused royal Château de Vincennes east of Paris. In 1756 the factory moved west to Sèvres. Louis XV would take control of the porcelain manufacture in 1759 becoming the "Manufacture Royale de Porcelaine".

*** The name 'François Duverdy' appears in January 1757 records as being a new entrant to the porcelain manufacture, noted as 16 years old, born in Strasbourg and being of small stature, with grey eyes and light brown hair.

CONDITION: Very good. Minor gilding loss
