** Paul Nicolas (1875–1952) studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy, France. In 1893, at just 18 years old, he joined Émile Gallé's glassworks as a decorator. Gallé quickly recognized the young man’s immense artistic and technical talent. Nicolas became a key designer, learning the complex chemical processes of acid-etching multi-layered cameo glass.
After the death of Émile Gallé in 1904, Nicolas became the chief decorator and designer for Établissements Gallé.
In 1919 he left Gallé, with a team of the factory's glass engravers & decorators and created a partnership with the Cristalleries de Saint-Louis to create cameo glass.
