French, circa 1930.
** Boubou was the name of a chimpanzee kept at the Jardin des Plantes zoo in Paris during the 1920s. Boubou was the subject of a number of Max Le Verrier's monkey sculptures. Le Verrier would visit the zoo frequently to sketch Boubou to make studies for his sculptures and he would reward the monkey with bananas. Apparently a close bond formed between the artist and chimp.
