A rare silvered bronze medallion commemorating the launch of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique / The French Line's passenger ship, the M.S. Lafayette in 1930. The obverse depicting a profile of the Marquis de La Fayette. The reverse with a depiction of the ship. Signed M. Delannoy

- MS Lafayette was the French Line's first diesel-powered ocean liner on the North Atlantic route. Its Maiden Voyage took place in May of 1930 from Le Havre to New York. On May 4, 1938, during an overhaul at Le Havre, a fire broke out due to spilled oil on the furnace room floor. The fire quickly spread and destroyed the ship.
** Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette (1757 - 1834) was a French military officer and politician who volunteered to join the Continental Army, led by General George Washington, in the American Revolutionary War.
