An Art Déco bronze medallion commemorating the launch of the passenger liner the SS Liberté by the French Line, Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. The obverse depicting Andromeda with broken chains and the reverse depicting the ship. In original presentation case.

French, circa 1950.

SS Liberté, originally named the SS Europa, was an ocean liner built for the German shipping company Norddeutsche Lloyd (NDL) to sail the transatlantic sea route. Launched in 1928, she was the most advanced, high-speed steam turbine ocean vessels of their day.

After World War II, the French line, Compagnie Générale Transatlantique was awarded the Europa as a war prize to replace the destroyed SS Normandie, which had caught fire and capsized at her moorings while interned by the United States in New York City. Europa was refitted at Le Havre and relaunched as the Liberté in 1950. She was laid up in 1962 and scrapped at La Spezia, Italy, in 1963.
