- Jean Barol (1873-1966) was an important French ceramicist in the early to mid 20thC. He was trained at a young age by Clement Massier in Vallauris, in the south of France. In 1912, Barol founded the ceramics studio BACS. in Vallauris with three other artists Marius Alexandre, Jean Carle and François Sicard. BACS was an anagram of the initial letters of their surnames. Barol was the glaze artist, Alexandre the painter, Carle the decorator and Sicard the potter.
In 1917, Barol left the BACS company with François Sicard. The two founded the Montieres factory in Amiens in Northern France, where they continued to produce iridescent and enameled Art Nouveau ceramics. Barol served as artistic director until 1920.
In 1920, Barol returned to BACS, where he worked as an artist until the company closed in 1927. Here he also produced ceramic items in the Art Deco style.
In 1927, Barol received the Meilleur Ouvrier de France award and subsequently taught ceramic techniques at the École Jules Ferry. Until his death in 1966, Jean Barol continued to work with ceramics in Cannes-La Bocca and in his birthplace of Vallauris.
